STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
SAFE OPERATION OF MEDICAL X-RAY MACHINES BY HOSPITALS, CLINICS AND OTHER
MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS IN INDIA
As
on date, more than 35, 000 medical X-ray machines are being used for the
benefit of patients all over the country and the number of X-ray machines
is increasing every year. X-ray machines, when energized, emit ionizing
radiation. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) is the Office of
the Competent Authority in India for enforcing rules and regulations in
respect of safe use of ionising radiation. The mission of the Board is
to ensure that the presence of ionizing radiation and the use of nuclear
energy in India do not cause unacceptable impact on the health of workers,
members of the public and the environment.
AERB
has published the Safety Code on "Medical
Diagnostic X-ray Equipment and Installation (No. AERB/SC/MED-2 (Rev.1)"
for ensuring safety in the operation of medical X-ray machines. All medical
X-ray machines shall be operated as per the requirements outlined in this
Code.
The
responsibility for ensuring compliance with the statutory provisions rests
with the owner / employer of medical X-ray installation.
It
is mandatory that all owners of medical X-ray installations in India shall
get registered with AERB. For this purpose an application form in the
standard format for Registration is available on the Website of AERB.
The application form can also be obtained from the Head, Radiological
Safety Division, AERB, Niyamak Bhavan, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai - 400 094.
It
is mandatory that every medical X-ray installation shall comply with the
following requirements:
- Only
that medical X-ray machine(s) which are Type Approved by AERB shall
be installed for use.
- Personnel
associated with the operation of X-ray machines shall be provided with
individual radiation monitoring badges. For availing personnel monitoring

- QA
performance tests of the X-ray machines shall be carried out. For this
purpose, contact the supplier or the manufacturer of your X-ray machine
or Head, Radiological Physics and Advisory Division, Bhabha Atomic Research
Center, CT & CRS Building, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai- 400 094.
- It
shall be ensured that only duly qualified X-ray technicians (the qualifications
are prescribed in the Safety Code on "Medical Diagnostic X-ray
Equipment and Installation (No. AERB/SC/MED-2
(Rev.1)" issued by AERB) are permitted to operate the X-ray
machines.
- Safety
accessories, equipment and other mandatory requirements as per the safety
code no. AERB/SC/MED-2 (Rev.1) shall
be procured and used.
Medical
X-ray installations will be subjected to periodic inspection by personnel
authorized, under section 17 of the Atomic
Energy Act 1962, by Chairman, AERB.
Non-compliance with the regulatory requirements could result in closure
of the defaulting x-ray installations.
