DIRECTOR, NUCLEAR PROJECTS SAFETY DIVISION

Shri R.I. Gujrathi, Chemical Engineer, joined 16th batch of BARC Training School in 1972. After the training, he worked as Shift-Engineer of CIRUS reactor and as a Team-Leader in Commissioning Group of R-5 (Dhruva) project. He was one among the first batch of Shift-Charge-Engineers of Dhruva reactor from pre-criticality period and during subsequent operation up to rated power level of 100 MWt. He was involved in first revision of the Safety Analysis Report of Dhruva.

Shri Gujrathi worked as a member of the Team who has developed the basic design of a compact core, LEU fuelled, light water cooled & moderated, heavy water reflected, pool type Multi Purpose Research Reactor (MPRR) of 5-20 MWt ratings. He was Convener of the Task Force assigned with the job of Core Conversion and Refurbishing of Existing Apsara reactor as a part of IX Plan project. Modification of existing Apsara reactor is planned to validate the technological aspects of MPRR design and simultaneously extending the useful life by refurbishing the reactor. He was involved in design & review of a 'Critical Facility for AHWR & 500 MWe PHWRs'.

Since 1987, while in BARC itself, Shri Gujrathi has been working in various Working Groups/ Committees constituted by AERB for Design review of Nuclear Power Projects. He was involved in review of certain systems of NPPs, NAPP onwards. He was a member of Working Group on 'Commissioning review of Kaiga-1&2 and RAPP-3&4 projects'. He was a member of Project Design Safety Committee of Kaiga- 3 & 4 and RAPP-5 & 6 till January 2004. He is a Specialist Group member for review of Engineered Safety Systems of 1000 MWe VVERs, Kudankulam project.

Shri Gujrathi was a member of TAPS Safety Committee and was involved in reviewing the reports on 'Operational Performance' and 'Ageing Management' as a part of AERB requirements towards obtaining re-authorization for continued operation of TAPS. He was a member of a committee for preparation of a guide on 'Renewal of Authorization for operational NPPs', AERB/ SG/ O-12. Since December 2001, he is working as Vice-Chairman of Kaiga -1&2 and RAPS-3&4 Safety Committee.

Shri R.I. Gujrathi joined AERB, on transfer from BARC, in July 2003. He is designated as Director, Nuclear Projects Safety Division with effect from November 28, 2003. His field of specialization is Operation, Commissioning & Design of Research Reactors and Safety Review of Nuclear Power Plants and Projects.
