Radiation Applications

AERB has a well defined regulatory process for ensuring safe design and operation of facilities using radiation applications. Various types of radiation applications are shown in Figure 1. Broad categories of radiation applications are for use of ionizing radiation in Industrial, Medical, Research and Consumer products. Industrial applications include radiation processing facilities, industrial radiography, nucleonic gauges, well-logging applications etc. Medical applications of radiation involve two broad categories. One category is for diagnostics and the other for therapeutic use of ionizing radiation. Radiation applications in research include gamma irradiation chambers, research accelerators and research labs using sealed and unsealed sources.

Manufacturers and suppliers of consumer products using sources of ionizing radiations also come under AERB’s purview. For formalizing the consenting process for radiation facilities and the registration of the operators of such facilities AERB has managed to develop an electronic licensing system (e-LORA) where applicants can get the guidance necessary for obtaining licence/approval/certificate/NOC or registering an individual (radiologist, RSO, radiographer etc.). This electronic system is used by applicants for obtaining consents, while the same is used by the regulators for issuing such consents.
